I love DC Charlie Stafford. She is a younger, braver and more reckless mix of female colleagues with whom I have worked. I wanted her to be a real police officer, who lives, eats and sleeps the job, but one, like us, who has family and personal issues to deal with. So many times I see police officers in books and on screen portrayed as damaged, bad-tempered, tortured souls but I wanted Charlie to be ‘normal’. She, Hunter and the team are people I have worked with, an eclectic mix of cultures, ages and sexes; an unlikely squad but one that is able to laugh, cry and be shocked like the rest of us.
He's watching... He's waiting... Who's next?
Buried in a woodland grave are a mother and her child. One is alive. One is dead.
DC Charlie Stafford is assigned by her boss, DI Geoffrey Hunter to assist with the missing person investigation.
As more pairs go missing, the pressure mounts. Leads are going cold. Suspects are identified but have they got the right person? Can Charlie stop the sadistic killer whose only wish is to punish those he deems to have committed a wrong. Or will she herself unwittingly become one.
A gripping, heart-stopping crime thriller, introducing new series character DC Charlotte 'Charlie' Stafford of London Metropolitan Police.
The Trophy Taker
He keeps them floating in Formaldehyde to stop them from rotting. Each trophy denotes a victim, tortured and butchered, their heart ripped out and discarded, replaced instead by symbols of their treachery. He sits alone admiring his trophies weekly; each and every one of them guilty in his eyes.
And now more must pay. But who or what links the victims? DC 'Charlie' Stafford is already investigating a series of escalating racist attacks and it now seems she has a vicious serial killer on her patch.
With no leads and time running out, the team at Lambeth are at breaking point.
Something has to give... and all the while he is watching, waiting… and counting.
An old dog lies wounded, beside the mutilated body of its owner. A woman is discovered bound and gagged, dead in her own bed. Both are police officers. Both have a smooth-stemmed red rose at their sides... and more will follow.
Charlie, Hunter and the team must find the killer targeting their own. Arrests are made - and missed. Tensions surface. Are Charlie’s suspicions correct or will they be dismissed? Lies and accusations abound but who is behind the murders? And why do the killings keep coming.
Can Charlie ensure the truth is heard – or will the liar triumph?
An unborn baby lies dumped amongst the rubbish; her tiny face as white as alabaster, her body as stiff as a miniature doll. A young prostitute is beaten and pushed from a car, her figure lying like a mannequin on the frozen concrete, her blood spilt, her life ebbing away. Both are broken beyond repair.
In the crack houses of Lambeth, are many more damaged people, their lives scarred by tragedy and violence. In their battle to bring the perpetrators of the two killings to justice, DC ‘Charlie’ Stafford and her boss DI Hunter struggle to identify the victim from the violator.
But can a broken doll ever truly be mended; or will the wounds of the past, fashion the events of the future?
